First Half
I have found the journey thus far of this course rather interesting. I must say that reading literature in Spanish has made me leap outside my comfort zone which is has been really interesting and a learning experience. Making your self analyze literature in Spanish is forcing your brain to reach into parts that have never been used and spark new ideas and ways of thinking. One thing I really have enjoyed is experiencing the different writing styles that are unique to the different writers that a function of the time they were written. Staring with Cumanda that follows the more traditional story line with a story that is driven by the plot being contrasted to one like Las Memorias de Mama Blanca, which completely departs from the traditional conventions. However, it is interesting to see that even with the evolution of style in the writing, the themes that appear in the pieces are constant and present in all eras. For example, we have studied the theme of family since the beginning in Cumanda all the way through to Las Hortensias. Each books comments on each theme differently and analyze the different family dynamics that exists. It seems to be that many things are time-less and will always be present and a part of human life.
A theme such as violence is evident not only in Cumanda adn La Piedra Callada, but troughout all human history. The same could be said about differention within classes and race that we see in most of all the works we have read. I must say I am quite excited about reading the classic Cien Años de Soledad.
